Small kitchen interior design is a different discipline. The standard 10×10 modular kitchen playbook doesn't fit Chennai's 60-90 sqft apartment kitchens. We design vertical (tall pantry pull-outs replace base cabinets), custom-depth carcass (540mm vs standard 600mm), and space-multiplier add-ons (Le-Mans corner, pull-out bottle units). Premium quality in compact footprint.
Six add-ons that turn a tight 60-sqft kitchen into a showroom-grade workspace. Each multiplies effective storage without adding floor footprint.
Floor-to-ceiling unit, 6-7 pull-out baskets. Clears 4-5 sqft of counter. ₹42-62k.
Hafele rotating shelf for L-shape dead corners. Recovers 30% of corner volume. ₹16-22k.
Blum-organised inserts. Replaces 3 shelves with 1 efficient drawer. ₹3.8-5.2k per drawer.
3-tier vertical pull-out, 15cm width. Stores 12-15 bottles. ₹4.2-6.2k.
Recessed hob, chimney-grade hood. Adds counter usability. ₹38-68k incl. appliance.
Rotating storage in 600mm corner cabinet. Holds 12-15 utensils. ₹6.5-9.8k.
Parallel galley — best for long narrow kitchens (8-10 ft long × 4-5 ft wide). Two cabinet runs facing each other. Maximum running counter, both walls used. Walking gap: 90-100cm minimum. Cost: ₹1.5-3.6 L for typical 75-90 sqft Chennai parallel galley. Works in: Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram older-builder flats.
Compact L-shape — for 60-75 sqft kitchens with 2 usable walls. Custom-depth base cabinets (540mm or 480mm instead of standard 600mm) maintain walking gap. Tall pantry on one end replaces 3-4 traditional cabinets. Cost: ₹1.4-3.2 L. Works in: most 2 BHK Chennai apartment kitchens.
Straight single-wall — for studios + 1 BHK kitchens under 60 sqft. Single wall of cabinets + counter. Tall pantry at one end is essential for storage. Cost: ₹85k-1.8 L. Works in: studio apartments, 1 BHK rental flats, ECR-suburb compact homes.
Avoid in small kitchens: U-shape (needs 100+ sqft and 3 free walls; cramped if forced into smaller space). Island layout (needs 120+ sqft). Standard 600mm-depth base cabinets in kitchens narrower than 1.2m (shrinks walking gap below 90cm minimum).
Mistake 1: using standard cabinet depths in a tight kitchen. Standard base cabinets are 600mm deep. In a Chennai apartment kitchen narrower than 1.2m wide, this leaves under 60cm walking gap when standing at the sink. Solution: use 540mm or 480mm custom-depth carcass on at least one wall. Adds ₹4-8k to material cost; transforms daily usability.
Mistake 2: forcing U-shape into kitchens that can only fit parallel-galley. U-shape needs 1.2m minimum walking gap between counters. Many Chennai apartments are 1.0-1.1m wide. U-shape forced into this width becomes cramped, the third counter wall is unusable, you lose the storage you were trying to gain. Parallel-galley uses the same wall space more efficiently for narrow kitchens.
Mistake 3: skipping the tall pantry pull-out. Compact kitchens benefit more from vertical storage than wider ones do — counter and base-cabinet space is already maxed out. A tall pantry pull-out (₹42-62k) adds 50-60% more storage capacity without taking floor space. It's the highest-ROI add-on for any small kitchen — yet most budget-cut clients skip it. Don't skip it. Skip the granite upgrade or the LED profile light instead.

"We compared four Chennai vendors. Homeli was the only one to send a written quote in 48 hours with actual brand names — Hettich, Hafele, IS:710 ply. No vague 'imported hardware' lines. Final price was within ₹8,000 of the quote."
"For a 1,800 sqft Adyar house renovation, we got quotes from ₹6.8 L to ₹14 L. Homeli explained where each rupee was going — marine ply, Blum hardware, quartz counter. Picked the ₹9.2 L tier. 4 months in, zero issues."
"For our 1980s T Nagar house, most vendors wanted to rip out the old teak. Homeli's team polish-refreshed the original almirahs and added modular kitchen — preserved the character. Total work under ₹7 L for the whole house."
