Sliding or hinged — how to actually choose

This decision is settled by one measurement, not by taste: the clear floor gap between the wardrobe wall and whatever sits opposite it, usually the bed.

Hinged shutters need roughly 600 mm of clear swing space. In a typical 10 × 10 or 10 × 12 Chennai bedroom with a queen bed, that swing often lands on the bed itself — you end up squeezing sideways to open the end shutter. Measure the gap first. Under about 750 mm, go sliding.

Sliding buys you that floor space, with two trade-offs. You can only ever see half the wardrobe at a time, so plan daily-use clothing on the side you open most. And the bottom channel collects dust — in Chennai, with construction dust and humidity, a cheap channel starts dragging within a couple of years. This is the one place where the roller brand genuinely matters: heavy shutters on weak rollers sag and stop meeting flush at the centre.

Hinged still wins on cost and flexibility. It is cheaper per running foot, you see the whole wardrobe at once, and you get more freedom in the internal layout because there is no central overlap to design around. In a bedroom with real walking space, hinged is usually the better buy.

Walk-in only makes sense with a dedicated room — realistically a master suite of about 8 × 10 ft or more. Below that you are simply paying premium rates for a corridor.

Planning the internals — what Indian wardrobes actually need

Most wardrobe regret is not about the shutters. It is about opening a beautiful wardrobe and finding nowhere sensible to put your clothes. Plan the inside before you pick a finish.

• Two hanging heights, not one. Shirts, tops and folded trousers need about 1,050 mm of hanging height. Long kurtas, coats and gowns need 1,500–1,700 mm. A wardrobe with a single rod wastes most of its volume.
• Shelves matter more than hanging for most Chennai families. Sarees are usually stored folded, not hung — so plan shelf-heavy, with roughly 350–400 mm between shelves so a stack stays reachable without toppling.
• Two to three drawers minimum for innerwear, accessories and jewellery. Drawers cost noticeably more than shelves because of the channels, so this is where a budget quietly goes — decide the count early rather than at installation.
• Take the loft. Chennai flats generally have 2,900–3,200 mm ceilings, leaving room for a 450–600 mm loft above the wardrobe. It is the cheapest storage per rupee in the whole house, and it is where suitcases and seasonal bedding belong.
• Keep 600 mm depth. Below about 550 mm a hanger will not sit square to the wall and every shoulder picks up a crease. Shallower wardrobes look neat in a drawing and disappoint daily.
• Mirror on the inside of a shutter instead of a separate dressing unit — in a compact Chennai bedroom that single decision often saves the floor space a dresser would have eaten.
• Marine BWP for the bottom panel especially. The base sits closest to mopping water and floor humidity; that is where ordinary MR-grade ply swells first and pushes the shutters out of line.

Why two wardrobe quotes differ by lakhs

Wardrobe quotes are unusually easy to make look cheap, because almost everything that drives the cost is invisible in a one-line price. Six questions separate a genuine quote from an optimistic one.

• What height does the per-foot rate assume? A running-foot rate is meaningless without it. ₹1,800/ft measured to 7 ft and ₹2,200/ft measured to 8 ft including the loft can be the same wardrobe.
• Is the carcass BWP or MR? This is the single most common silent swap, and it is invisible once the shutters are on. Ask for the grade in writing against each unit.
• Is the shutter finish specified by code? “Premium laminate” is not a specification. A laminate or acrylic code is.
• How many drawers and shelves are included? Two wardrobes of identical width can differ by more than a lakh purely on internals.
• Is the hardware brand named? Hettich, Häfele or Blum written into the quote — with the retailer invoice handed to you at handover, because the manufacturer warranty is only claimable if you hold it.
• Is the loft included or extra? Frequently excluded from the headline number, then added back later.
