Why quartz for Indian kitchens

Quartz is ~90% natural quartz crystal + ~10% resin binder. Unlike granite (porous, needs sealing) or marble (soft, stains), quartz is non-porous — it never needs sealing, resists stains from turmeric/oil/acids, and won't harbour bacteria. For a busy Indian kitchen with masala, oil, and acidic ingredients, it's the most practical premium surface.

Kavya's take: Quartz is my default recommendation for Indian kitchen counters now. Granite is fine and cheaper, but the non-porous, zero-maintenance nature of quartz wins in a turmeric-and-oil Indian kitchen. The only catch — keep hot pans on a trivet; quartz resin can scorch above 150°C.

Kavya's take: Granite wins on heat and price; quartz wins on maintenance and stain resistance. For most Chennai families I recommend quartz for its zero-maintenance nature — just use a trivet for hot pans.

The verdict

Quartz is the smart premium counter for Indian kitchens — non-porous, stain-proof, zero-sealing. Pokarna Quantra (Indian) offers the best value-to-quality at ₹350-650/sq ft; Caesarstone/Silestone (imported) are the prestige choices at ₹450-1,000. Granite remains a fine, cheaper, more heat-tolerant alternative if you prefer natural stone.

Common questions

Is quartz better than granite for Indian kitchens?
For most homes, yes — quartz is non-porous (never needs sealing), resists turmeric/oil/acid stains, and is hygienic. Granite is cheaper and more heat-tolerant but porous (needs sealing). Quartz wins on low-maintenance; use a trivet for hot pans.
Which quartz brand is best in India?
Imported: Caesarstone (Israel) and Silestone (Spain) are the prestige leaders. Domestic: Pokarna Quantra offers the best value-to-quality. Kalinga Stone and AGL are solid mid-range. All are non-porous engineered quartz.
How much does quartz counter cost in India 2026?
Installed: Pokarna Quantra ₹350-650/sq ft; Caesarstone ₹450-900; Silestone ₹500-1,000; Kalinga ₹280-550. Imported brands command a premium for design range and finish.
Does quartz scorch from hot pans?
Yes — quartz contains ~10% resin which can discolour above ~150°C. Always use a trivet or hot pad for pans straight off the flame. This is quartz's one weakness vs granite.
Does quartz need sealing like granite?
No — quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing. That's its biggest advantage over granite and marble in an Indian kitchen. Just wipe clean with mild soap.
Is Indian quartz as good as imported?
Pokarna Quantra (Indian) is genuinely premium-grade and competes with imports at lower cost. Mid-range Indian brands are good value but check resin quality + finish. For most kitchens, Indian premium quartz is excellent.
Can quartz be used for bathroom vanity?
Yes — quartz is excellent for vanities (non-porous, stain-proof, hygienic). It's also used for feature walls and table tops. Its versatility beyond kitchens is a bonus.
Quartz vs Italian marble for counters?
Quartz, for kitchens — Italian marble is soft and acid-sensitive (lemon/vinegar etch it). Quartz gives a similar premium look with vastly better durability and zero maintenance in a working Indian kitchen.
