Confused by plywood grade labels? IS:303, IS:710, IS:1328 — they sound like jargon but the difference decides whether your furniture survives Chennai's humidity. Here's the honest breakdown of each grade, with real pricing and exactly where to use which.

Indian plywood is graded by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Three grades matter for interiors:
| Grade | BIS Standard | Resin | Water resistance |
|---|---|---|---|
| MR (Moisture Resistant) | IS:1328 | Urea-formaldehyde | Ambient humidity only |
| BWP (Boiling Water Proof) | IS:303 | Phenol-formaldehyde | Survives boiling water |
| Marine BWP | IS:710 | Phenol-formaldehyde (higher spec) | 72-hr boil + fungus resistant |
IS:710 is the most rigorous Indian plywood standard. Beyond boiling-water resistance it adds:
| Grade | 18mm ₹/sq ft | Premium over MR | Lifespan in Chennai |
|---|---|---|---|
| MR IS:1328 | ₹45-65 | baseline | 3-5 yrs near moisture |
| BWP IS:303 | ₹65-95 | +₹20-30 | 15-20 yrs |
| Marine BWP IS:710 | ₹95-140 | +₹50-75 | 20-25 yrs |
The jump from MR to BWP is the one that matters most. The jump from BWP to Marine is worth it for wet zones and coastal homes, optional elsewhere.
| Zone | Recommended grade |
|---|---|
| Wardrobes, TV units, dry storage | BWP IS:303 |
| Kitchen base + under-sink cabinet | Marine BWP IS:710 |
| Bathroom vanity | Marine BWP IS:710 or WPC |
| Coastal locality (OMR/ECR) — whole home | Marine BWP IS:710 |
| Pooja unit, decorative panels (never wet) | BWP IS:303 acceptable |
Never use MR in Chennai cabinetry. Use BWP IS:303 as your default for dry zones, and Marine BWP IS:710 for wet zones and coastal localities. Inland homes (Anna Nagar, T Nagar, Velachery) can mix BWP IS:303 + Marine in wet spots; coastal homes (OMR, ECR) should go full Marine.
