The three grades — decoded

Indian plywood is graded by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Three grades matter for interiors:

GradeBIS StandardResinWater resistance
MR (Moisture Resistant)IS:1328Urea-formaldehydeAmbient humidity only
BWP (Boiling Water Proof)IS:303Phenol-formaldehydeSurvives boiling water
Marine BWPIS:710Phenol-formaldehyde (higher spec)72-hr boil + fungus resistant

What makes Marine BWP (IS:710) special

IS:710 is the most rigorous Indian plywood standard. Beyond boiling-water resistance it adds:

  • 72-hour boil test — plies must not separate after 3 days in boiling water
  • Mycological test — resistance to fungal attack (critical in Chennai monsoon damp)
  • Tighter density + fewer core gaps — better screw-holding, less warping
  • Preservative treatment — many IS:710 sheets are also borer + termite treated
Kavya's take: For homes within 3-5 km of the coast — Sholinganallur, Navalur, Injambakkam, the ECR belt — I specify Marine BWP IS:710 throughout, not just wet zones. Salt-laden air is relentless; it's the one place the extra ₹40-50/sq ft genuinely pays back.

Pricing across all three grades — Chennai 2026

Grade18mm ₹/sq ftPremium over MRLifespan in Chennai
MR IS:1328₹45-65baseline3-5 yrs near moisture
BWP IS:303₹65-95+₹20-3015-20 yrs
Marine BWP IS:710₹95-140+₹50-7520-25 yrs

The jump from MR to BWP is the one that matters most. The jump from BWP to Marine is worth it for wet zones and coastal homes, optional elsewhere.

The verdict

Never use MR in Chennai cabinetry. Use BWP IS:303 as your default for dry zones, and Marine BWP IS:710 for wet zones and coastal localities. Inland homes (Anna Nagar, T Nagar, Velachery) can mix BWP IS:303 + Marine in wet spots; coastal homes (OMR, ECR) should go full Marine.

Common questions

Is Marine BWP plywood worth the extra cost?
For wet zones (under-sink, bathroom vanity) and coastal localities (OMR, ECR) — absolutely. The ₹50-75/sq ft premium over MR buys fungus resistance + 72-hour boil tolerance that genuinely matters in salt air. For dry inland cabinetry, BWP IS:303 is sufficient.
What's the difference between IS:710 and IS:303?
IS:710 (Marine) adds a 72-hour boil test, mycological/fungus resistance, and tighter core density over IS:303 (standard BWP). Both are boiling-water-proof; IS:710 is the higher-spec version for demanding wet/coastal conditions.
Can I use IS:303 BWP for my kitchen?
Yes for upper cabinets and dry sections. For the under-sink cabinet and any area near the dishwasher, step up to Marine BWP IS:710 — that's where water exposure is constant.
Do coastal Chennai homes really need Marine BWP everywhere?
Within ~3-5 km of the coast (Sholinganallur, Navalur, ECR belt), yes — salt-laden air accelerates degradation of all materials. We spec full Marine BWP IS:710 for these homes. Inland homes can use BWP IS:303 for dry zones.
How do I confirm the plywood grade I'm getting?
The BIS stamp is printed on the sheet: IS:710 (Marine), IS:303 (BWP), IS:1328 (MR). Insist on seeing it before installation and get the retailer invoice at handover.
Is Marine BWP termite-proof?
IS:710 includes fungus resistance and many sheets are preservative-treated against borers and termites — but confirm 'termite-treated' explicitly. In Chennai we also recommend pre-construction anti-termite treatment for full protection.
Which brands make genuine Marine BWP?
Greenply (Green Platinum), Century (Marine / Club Prime), and Sharon Marine are reliable. Always verify the IS:710 stamp — Marine grade commands a premium so substitution fraud is common.
Marine BWP vs WPC board for bathroom — which is better?
WPC is fully waterproof and good for vanity carcass in very wet bathrooms. Marine BWP holds screws and hardware better long-term. For most Chennai bathrooms, Marine BWP vanity with proper edge-sealing works well; WPC is the choice for extremely wet conditions.
