Greenply vs Century Ply — honest brand comparison

The two biggest plywood brands in India. Both make excellent BWP and both make cheaper MR ranges that get confused for the premium ones. Here's the honest breakdown of their ranges, pricing, and which to choose — from a designer who has used both across hundreds of cabinets.

The brands at a glance

Both Greenply and Century are reputable, ISI-certified, widely available in Chennai. The danger isn't picking the 'wrong' brand — it's picking the wrong range within a brand. Each makes a budget MR line that's easily confused with their premium BWP line.

The Sainik trap

Century's Sainik is their best-selling line — but it's MR grade (IS:1328), not BWP. Many vendors quote 'Century plywood' and deliver Sainik, letting the client assume they're getting Century's premium quality. They're not.

Kavya's take: If someone quotes you 'Century ply' for a kitchen, ask specifically: 'Sainik or Club Prime?' Sainik is MR — wrong for Chennai. Club Prime or Architect Ply is the BWP you want. Same logic for Greenply: Ecotec is MR, Green Club/Platinum is BWP.

Which to actually choose

Honestly, for BWP IS:303 there is no meaningful quality gap between Greenply Green Club and Century Club Prime — both are excellent. Choose on price and local availability. For Marine, both are equally good.

  • Greenply Green Club — slightly more consistent availability in Chennai; easy to verify
  • Century Club Prime / Architect Ply — equally good; Architect Ply has marginally better calibration for premium work
Kavya's take: We use both depending on availability and the day's pricing. What matters far more than Greenply-vs-Century is BWP-vs-MR. Get the grade right first; the brand is a secondary, near-tie decision.

The verdict

Greenply and Century are both excellent — there's no wrong choice between their BWP ranges (Green Club vs Club Prime). The real risk is being sold their MR lines (Ecotec / Sainik) at BWP expectations. Always confirm the specific range name + the IS:303 or IS:710 stamp.

Common questions

Is Greenply or Century better?
For their BWP ranges (Greenply Green Club vs Century Club Prime), there's no meaningful quality difference — both are excellent. Choose on price and availability. The critical decision is BWP vs MR grade, not the brand.
What is the Sainik trap?
Century Sainik is their popular budget line — but it's MR grade (IS:1328), not BWP. Vendors often quote 'Century' and deliver Sainik, letting clients assume premium quality. Always ask 'Sainik or Club Prime?' — Club Prime is the BWP you want.
What's the Greenply equivalent of Sainik?
Greenply Ecotec is the budget MR line. The premium BWP lines are Green Club (IS:303) and Green Platinum (Marine IS:710). Avoid Ecotec for Chennai cabinetry.
How much does Greenply BWP cost in Chennai 2026?
Greenply Green Club (BWP IS:303) is about ₹72-92/sq ft for 18mm; Green Platinum (Marine IS:710) is ₹100-135/sq ft.
Which is best for a modular kitchen?
Either Greenply Green Club or Century Club Prime (both BWP IS:303) for upper cabinets, stepping up to Green Platinum or Century Marine (IS:710) for the under-sink base. Both brands are equally suitable.
Are there cheaper plywood brands worth considering?
Anchor, Kitply, and Sharon make decent BWP at lower prices — verify the IS:303 stamp. For premium work we stick with Greenply/Century for consistency, but value brands are acceptable if BIS-certified.
How do I verify the exact range I'm getting?
Both brands print the range name + BIS standard on the sheet. Greenply uses a verification system (SMS/QR code) on premium sheets. Always get the retailer invoice naming the exact product.
Does the brand matter for warranty?
Both Greenply and Century offer manufacturer warranties (often 7-25 years on premium BWP). The warranty is only valid with proof of genuine product — another reason to keep the retailer invoice we hand over at closing.
