Vastu for the kitchen — stove & sink position

The kitchen is the home of Agni (fire) in Vastu Shastra, so its direction and the placement of the stove, sink and storage carry traditional weight. Here's the genuine guidance on the South-East 'Agni corner', cooking direction, and how to apply it in a modular Chennai kitchen.

Best direction for the kitchen

Vastu places the kitchen in the South-East (SE) — the Agni (fire) corner ruled by the fire element — making it the ideal zone for cooking. The North-West (NW) is the accepted alternative. The North-East is the one direction Vastu strongly avoids for a kitchen.

Stove + cooking direction

  • Place the stove/hob in the SE of the kitchen
  • Cook facing East — the most recommended cooking direction
  • Keep the stove + sink apart (fire + water should not be adjacent or facing)
  • Don't place the stove directly in front of the kitchen door
Kavya's take: In modular kitchens the rule clients most want honoured is the cook facing east with the hob in the SE — and in most layouts we can plan the platform to achieve it. The fire-and-water separation (hob away from sink) is also genuinely good kitchen design, Vastu or not — you don't want splashing near a flame. So here Vastu + practical design agree.

Our honest approach: Vastu Shastra is a traditional system of orientation that many Chennai + Tamil Nadu families value deeply. We respect it fully and integrate it into your design wherever your home's fixed layout allows — without making fear-based claims or forcing impractical structural changes. Where an apartment can't match a rule, we prioritise the highest-impact placements + sensible adjustments, so you honour the tradition without compromising a livable, beautiful home.

The verdict

Vastu favours the kitchen in the South-East (Agni corner), with the hob in the SE and the cook facing east, the sink/water in the north-east, and the fridge + heavy storage in the south-west. Keep fire (hob) and water (sink) separated — which is good kitchen design anyway. In a fixed apartment kitchen, we orient the platform to get the cooking direction + fire/water separation right, and adapt the rest to your real space.

Common questions

Which direction is best for a kitchen as per Vastu?
The South-East (SE) — the Agni (fire) corner — is ideal in Vastu. The North-West is the accepted alternative. Vastu strongly advises against the North-East for a kitchen, as the NE is reserved for the pooja + water element.
Which direction should I face while cooking?
Vastu most recommends cooking while facing East. So the hob/stove is placed so the cook stands facing east. In modular kitchens this can usually be planned into the platform layout.
Where should the gas stove be placed?
In the South-East of the kitchen (the fire corner), with the cook facing east. Avoid placing the stove directly in front of the kitchen door, and keep it away from the sink — fire + water shouldn't be adjacent or face each other.
Where should the kitchen sink be as per Vastu?
In the North-East or north of the kitchen — the water zone. Crucially, keep the sink separated from the hob (fire), not adjacent or directly facing it. This is both a Vastu principle + sensible kitchen design (no splashing near a flame).
Can the kitchen be in the North-East?
Vastu advises against it — the North-East is reserved for the pooja + water element, and a kitchen's fire there is considered inauspicious. If a flat's fixed kitchen is in the NE, the practical remedy is correct internal placement (hob in the SE of that kitchen) + keeping the NE corner clean/light.
Where should the fridge be placed in the kitchen?
Vastu suggests the South-West or south for the fridge + heavy storage. Grains + provisions suit south/west cabinets. The drinking-water pot goes in the North-East.
My apartment kitchen isn't in the SE — what can I do?
You usually can't move a flat's kitchen, so focus on what you control: place the hob in the SE of the existing kitchen, cook facing east, separate the sink from the hob, and keep the NE corner clean. These internal placements honour the spirit of the rule.
How does Homeli apply Vastu to modular kitchens?
We plan the platform so the hob sits in the fire zone with the cook facing east, separate the sink from the hob, and position the fridge + storage per Vastu where the layout allows. We integrate your preferences into a practical, beautiful modular design + confirm the placements in the plan.
