What actually matters in a tile

  • Water absorption — vitrified/porcelain (<0.5%) for floors; ceramic (higher) for walls only
  • PEI rating — abrasion resistance; PEI 4-5 for high-traffic floors
  • Format — large-format = fewer grout lines = more premium look
  • Finish — matte (anti-skid, bathrooms), glossy (living), lappato (semi-polished)
Kavya's take: Kajaria, Somany and the challengers are all genuinely good — I've used all of them. I choose by the specific design the client loves + the technical spec (vitrified for floors, anti-skid matte for bathrooms) + price on the day. Brand loyalty matters far less than picking the right tile type for each room.

Pricing — India 2026 (per sq ft, supplied)

The verdict

Kajaria (India's #1, widest range) and Somany are both excellent — near-tied. Bramo, RAK + Simpolo are strong challengers with good large-format value. Don't over-index on brand; choose by the right tile type per room (vitrified floors, anti-skid matte bathrooms, the design you love) + price. For showpiece areas, step up to premium GVT or Italian porcelain.

Common questions

Kajaria or Somany — which tile is better?
They're near-tied — both are excellent, widely-available Indian tile leaders. Kajaria has the #1 market position + widest range; Somany offers strong value. Choose by the specific design you want + the right tile spec per room + price. Brand loyalty matters less than tile type.
How much do tiles cost in India 2026?
Per sq ft supplied: standard ceramic wall ₹35-70, vitrified floor ₹50-130, premium large-format ₹130-300, designer GVT ₹200-400. Italian porcelain is ₹350+.
What tile should I use for floors vs walls?
Floors: vitrified/porcelain (low water absorption <0.5%, PEI 4-5 for high-traffic). Walls: ceramic is fine (cheaper). Bathrooms: anti-skid matte for floors, any for walls. Never use wall ceramic on floors — it scratches + cracks.
Is Bramo a good tile brand?
Yes — Bramo (and RAK, Simpolo) are strong challengers offering good large-format + designer tiles at competitive prices. They're solid mid-premium choices. Verify the vitrified spec + PEI rating for floor use.
What is GVT tile?
GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tile) is vitrified tile with a printed glazed surface — giving the durability of vitrified + the design range of glazed (marble-look, wood-look, etc.). Premium GVT is the popular choice for modern floors.
What's the most important tile spec?
Water absorption (vitrified <0.5% for floors) + PEI abrasion rating (4-5 for high-traffic). These decide durability far more than brand. For bathrooms, anti-skid (R10+) matters for safety.
Large tiles or small tiles?
Large-format (600x1200mm+) gives fewer grout lines + a more premium, seamless look — now popular for living + dining floors. Smaller tiles suit bathrooms + intricate layouts. Larger needs a flatter substrate + skilled laying.
What does Homeli recommend?
Vitrified/GVT from Kajaria, Somany or a quality challenger for floors (large-format for living areas), anti-skid matte for bathrooms. We choose by design + spec + price (brand-neutral) and name the exact tile + size + PEI in the quote.
