Room-by-Room Vastu Guide
Main Entrance (Brahmasthan)
- Best direction: North or east-facing entrance is most auspicious
- Keep the entrance well-lit — a bright entrance invites positive energy
- No clutter, shoes, or dust near the entrance
- A fresh doormat, a small plant or tulsi, and a welcoming threshold design
- Avoid mirrors facing the main door (energy deflection)
- The door should open inward and swing completely open without obstruction
Living Room
- Best location: North or east of the home
- Avoid heavy beams directly above seating areas
- Sofa and main seating should face east or north (host faces favourable direction)
- Television in the south-east corner of the living room
- Keep the centre of the living room (brahmasthan) open and unobstructed
- Use light, bright colours — yellow, cream, light green are considered positive for living rooms
Kitchen
- Best location: South-east corner (agni kona — fire element's corner)
- Gas stove should face east — cook faces east while cooking
- Avoid kitchen in the north-east corner (sacred space) or directly above/below a bathroom
- Wash basin and cooking stove should not be directly adjacent (water and fire conflict)
- Use warm colours — orange, yellow, red accents are vastu-positive for kitchens
- Keep the kitchen clutter-free and well-ventilated
Master Bedroom
- Best location: South-west corner of the home (provides stability and strength)
- Sleep direction: Head towards south (preferred) or east — never north
- Bed should not face the bedroom door directly
- Avoid placing a mirror opposite the bed — vastu considers this disruptive to sleep
- Wardrobe on south or west wall preferred
- Use calming colours — light pink, light blue, warm beige, cream
Bathroom
- Best location: North-west or west of the home
- Avoid bathroom in north-east corner (most sacred zone in vastu)
- Bathroom door should always remain closed
- Keep the toilet seat lid down when not in use
- Good ventilation is essential — stagnant air is inauspicious in vastu
Puja Room
- Best location: North-east corner (Ishaan kona) — most sacred in vastu
- Idols should face east or west — worshipper faces east or west when praying
- Keep puja room well-lit with natural light or bright lamps
- No bathroom or kitchen directly above or below the puja room
- Clutter-free: only what is used regularly should be visible
- In apartments where dedicated north-east room is not available, a wall niche in the north or east of any room is acceptable
When Vastu Conflicts With Your Layout
In most modern Chennai apartment layouts, perfect vastu compliance is not achievable — the developer designed for maximum floor plate efficiency, not vastu. In this case, interior design can still maximise vastu principles within the given constraints:
- Furniture placement remedies: A bedroom in a non-ideal location can still have the bed positioned in a vastu-positive direction (head south)
- Colour remedies: Each room has vastu-positive and negative colours — use the right palette even if the room is in a non-ideal position
- Crystal and plant remedies: Vastu consultants often prescribe specific crystals or plants at specific compass points to correct energy imbalances
- Mirror placement: Mirrors can be used to symbolically redirect energy in vastu-compromised spaces
Our interior design team in Chennai works with vastu guidelines as part of the design process — you don't need a separate vastu consultant for basic compliance. For deep vastu corrections, we recommend a specialist vastu consultant in conjunction with our design work.

Yes — vastu compliance can be achieved at the interior level through furniture placement, colour choices, lighting, mirror positions, and plant/crystal placements. A vastu-aware interior designer can maximise compliance within existing layout constraints without structural changes.
The ideal kitchen location is the south-east corner (fire element's direction). The cooking stove should face east — the cook faces east while cooking. Avoid placing the kitchen in the north-east corner or adjacent to the bathroom.
Preferred sleeping direction: head towards the south (feet pointing north). Second preferred: head towards east. Avoid head towards the north, which vastu considers inauspicious for health and sleep quality.
The north-east corner (Ishaan kona) is most auspicious. The idol should face east or west, never south. The puja room should not be below a staircase or adjacent to a bathroom. In apartments where this isn't possible, a north or east-facing wall niche is acceptable.
