In most Chennai apartments, a dedicated pooja room is not possible — the space simply doesn't allow it. But that doesn't mean the prayer corner gets neglected. In fact, some of the most beautiful pooja spaces we've designed are integrated within living rooms — thoughtfully planned, Vastu-aligned, and visually stunning.
Vastu Rules for Pooja Corner in Living Room
- Best corner: North-east (Ishanya corner) of the living room
- Idol direction: East or west facing — never south
- Prayer direction: Person faces east or north while praying
- Avoid: South-east corner (fire zone), under stairs, adjacent to bathrooms
Design Options for Living Room Pooja Space
Option 1: Recessed Niche in Wall
A dedicated niche cut into the wall structure, lined with marble or stone, with warm LED cove lighting. The idol sits inside the lit niche. When not in use, a pair of wooden or glass doors close over the niche for privacy. Very elegant and space-efficient — the unit has no floor footprint.
This is our most popular choice for 2BHK and 3BHK apartments where a wall can be dedicated. Cost: ₹25,000–₹55,000 depending on niche size, material, and door type.
Option 2: Open Wooden Shelf Unit
A wall-mounted open wooden shelf with a decorative arch frame — teak or sheesham wood with traditional carvings or simple clean lines. The idol sits on the central shelf at a height comfortable for kneeling or standing prayer. A brass lamp holder, incense stand, and flower vase complete the setup.
This is the most affordable dedicated pooja unit. Cost: ₹15,000–₹35,000.
Option 3: Enclosed Cabinet with Doors
A full cabinet with solid or jaali (lattice) doors that completely enclose the pooja space when closed. This is ideal for living rooms used for entertainment — the sacred space is fully separated from the TV and seating when guests are over. Teak or sheesham cabinets with carved door panels are the most common in Chennai.
Cost: ₹35,000–₹80,000 depending on size and wood type.
Option 4: Modern Minimalist Pooja Corner
For contemporary homes that want a pooja space without traditional aesthetics — a clean white or teak panel wall section with a recessed niche and warm LED light, a marble platform for the idol, and simple brass lamp. No carvings, no ornate details. Sacred in feeling, minimal in appearance.
Cost: ₹20,000–₹45,000.
Materials
- Teak wood: Most preferred — sacred, durable, resistant to moisture and termites
- Sheesham (rosewood): Slightly more affordable than teak, beautiful grain
- Marble: Platform, base, or back panel — pristine white or beige marble is deeply traditional
- MDF (painted): For modern minimalist designs — cost-effective, smooth finish
- Brass accents: Lamp holders, door handles, jaali work — adds authentic sacred character
Lighting for Pooja Unit
Warm white LED (2700–3000K) creates a reverent, glowing atmosphere that complements brass and gold elements. Avoid cool white or daylight LEDs — they feel clinical in a sacred context. Options:
- LED strip inside the niche recess (most popular)
- Small spotlight recessed above the idol
- Traditional brass oil lamp (deepam) — can be supplemented with hidden LED
